Brass simulating embroidered cloth. This was a non-regulation insignia sold by period sutlers, catalogs, and military dealers, most commonly used by officers as embroidered badges were expensive and did not hold up well in the field. Although intended for officers, photographs will on occasional show enlisted men also wearing them. The enlisted use of these metallic horn appears to be very common in images of troops from New England states, particularly New Hampshire.
Available in Large, approximately 3″ wide x 1-7/8″ high (slouch hat) and Small, approximately 2″ wide x 1-1/8″ high (kepi) sizes. Made from stamped brass with soldered brass wire hooks for attaching to hats or other items. Made in the U.S.A.
